Keep Your Teeth White with Some Foods

Here are 7 natural remedies for whiter teeth that you may already have in your kitchen.

Apples

Just chewing on apples helps scrub your teeth. Apples also have a high concentration of malic acid, which is used in some toothpastes. Malic acid increases saliva, which cleans your teeth and helps remove stains, according to a 2013 study conducted at the University of Grenada (Spain).

Pineapple

Pineapple is the only food that naturally contains bromelain—a compound with anti-inflammatory and cleansing properties. A recent study in the International Journal of Dental Hygiene found that bromelain is an effective ingredient in a stain-removing toothpaste.

Broccoli

Broccoli is high in fiber, and eating lots of fiber helps reduce inflammation in your mouth (along with the rest of your body). Eating crisp raw broccoli can help clean and polish your teeth and, according to research in the European Journal of Dentistry, the iron in broccoli has the added benefit of providing a wall of protection for your teeth against the enamel-degrading acid that’s produced by bacteria. This helps prevent stains and cavities.

Raisins

You may think raisins are bad for your teeth because of their sticky sweetness, but they’re actually protective. Research shows that bran cereal with raisins helps clean the mouth faster than the same cereal without raisins. Chewing raisins stimulates saliva, which helps prevent plaque, stains and cavities from developing by neutralizing the acidic environment created by other foods and bacteria in your mouth.

Cheese

Here’s another reason to smile for the camera and "say cheese." Cheese helps keep your teeth strong with minerals, such as calcium and phosphorus, and protein that protects tooth enamel. According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the lactic acid in cheese is also protective against tooth decay. Plus, hard cheeses help clean your teeth by stimulating saliva.

Water

Drinking water throughout the day promotes saliva production, which in turn helps keep your pearly whites, well—white. Sipping water during and after a meal also helps rinse your mouth of any debris and loose plaque.

Strawberries

Like apples, strawberries also contain malic acid, and they have the added benefit of ellagitannins, antioxidants that can help reduce stain-attracting bacteria and inflammation in your mouth. And, strawberries’ vitamin C can help prevent gum inflammation and periodontal disease.

5 Common Dental Issues When Wearing Braces

When it comes to braces for kids, you can’t be too diligent about encouraging proper dental care and routine cleanings. Failure to emphasize consistent healthy dental habits in your children can lead to serious, and sometimes permanent, damage.

Demineralization occurs when food debris left on or between teeth comes in contact with bacteria and creates acid. The acid begins to damage the teeth by breaking down components of the enamel, starting with vital minerals, like calcium and phosphorous. If the process is not stopped, by timely cleaning of the affected area, “white scars” will appear. These are a chalky outline, often in the shape of the brace on tooth, which remains once the braces have been removed. Unfortunately, the spots are permanent and often a sensitive area on the tooth/teeth. Demineralization will not occur if your teeth are properly and diligently cared for: brushing after every meal, flossing daily, and avoiding high-sugar and sticky foods.

Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums surrounding the teeth. It is the earliest stage of periodontitis, or gum disease. Gingivitis can be identified by red, swollen gums that often bleed while brushing. Gingivitis is reversible, but if left untreated can cause permanent damage and even tooth loss. Flossing and cleaning near the gum line can be difficult with braces, but don’t let that stop you from making it happen every day. Brushing and flossing daily are essential to prevention.

Sensitivity is characterized by a sharp, almost stinging sensation when you eat hot or cold foods. It occurs when the protective enamel of the tooth or teeth has worn down, exposing the nerve endings of the tooth. Sensitive teeth are often a result of vigorous brushing or lack of proper dental care and routine cleanings. Brushing after every meal and flossing daily can help prevent sensitive teeth, but if you are already experiencing this discomfort, speak to your orthodontist about other treatment options, such as special toothpastes or fluoride treatments.

Plaque is the clear, sticky film formed by bacteria inside the mouth. Plaque occurs when bacteria, saliva and food debris build-up in the mouth. In the presence of sugar, plaque forms acid that erodes the tooth enamel and leads to tooth decay. If plaque is not routinely removed with daily brushing, flossing and routine dental cleanings, it can turn it tartar.

Tartar can lead to stains and discoloration on the teeth as well as tooth decay, gum disease and tooth loss. Once tartar has formed, it requires a trip to the orthodontist for a professional cleaning to remove it. Kids with braces are susceptible because it can be hard to clean every crevice of the mouth. However, brushing after every meal and flossing daily can make great strides in reducing plaque and tartar buildup.

Gum Recession

More information at: Web Md.

Gum recession is the process in which the margin of the gum tissue that surrounds the teeth wears away, or pulls back, exposing more of the tooth, or the tooth's root. When gum recession occurs, "pockets," or gaps, form between the teeth and gum line, making it easy for disease-causing bacteria to build up. If left untreated, the supporting tissue and bone structures of the teeth can be severely damaged, and may ultimately result in tooth loss.

Gum recession is a common dental problem. Most people don't know they have gum recession because it occurs gradually. The first sign of gum recession is usually tooth sensitivity, or you may notice a tooth looks longer than normal. Typically, a notch can be felt near the gum line.

Gum recession is not something you want to ignore. If you think your gums are receding, make an appointment with your dentist. There are treatments that can repair the gum and prevent further damage.

Why Do Gums Recede?

There are a number of factors that can cause your gums to recede, including:

* Periodontal diseases. These are bacterial gum infections that destroy gum tissue and supporting bone that hold your teeth in place. Gum disease is the main cause of gum recession.

* Your genes. Some people may be more susceptible to gum disease. In fact, studies show that 30% of the population may be predisposed to gum disease, regardless of how well they care for their teeth.

* Aggressive tooth brushing. If you brush your teeth too hard or the wrong way, it can cause the enamel on your teeth to wear away and your gums to recede.

* Insufficient dental care. Inadequate brushing, flossing, and rinsing with antibacterial mouthwash makes it easy for plaque to turn into calculus (tartar) -- a hard substance that builds on and between your teeth and can only be removed by a professional dental cleaning. It can lead to gum recession.

* Hormonal changes. Fluctuations in female hormone levels during a woman's lifetime, such as in puberty, pregnancy, and menopause, can make gums more sensitive and more vulnerable to gum recession.

By taking good care of your teeth, you can have a healthy smile forever. Just call at Unicare Dental Center, the affordable dentists in Houston: 713 995 4000.
