Gum recession can be a huge dental problem causing teeth to loosen and creating pockets for bacteria to grow and risk infection.

There are two main things to consider if you are worried about gum recession: what causes it and how to prevent and reverse it. Periodontal disease is the most common cause of gum recession and some symptoms to look for are inflammation, large plaque deposits, pain, redness, and bad or damaged fillings.

Other risk factors that increase the risk of gum recession are crooked teeth, lack of oral hygiene, smoking, diabetes, hormonal changes, stress, bridges/implants/dentures, and genetics.

Gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease which is reversible with proper oral hygiene and periodontitis is the more advanced stage which requires dental treatment and/or surgery. Overly forceful brushing and tooth grinding/clenching are other causes of receding gums.

To prevent and reverse gum recession, practice good oral hygiene, use a softer toothbrush, and use gum-care toothpaste. If these don’t work, there are treatments such as the pinhole surgical technique and gum graft surgery.
