Like it or not, we all know that an important part of our dental care involves regular trips to the dentist, but the foundation of oral hygiene is at home. Brushing and flossing twice a day is not only of the utmost importance in maintaining a healthy and attractive smile, but the tools we use to perform these daily rituals can also make or break beautiful teeth, so don’t pick any old toothbrush, find the one that’s right for you.

Our mouths, like any other part of us, come in all shapes. We probably wouldn’t think too hard about trying to fit a foot into a shoe that doesn’t fit, but many of us hope that a one-size-fits-all toothbrush will fit all. Baffled by the wide variety of dental products that we face in the store, we simply choose the color toothbrush that we like the most and move forward, which undermines our oral health.

First of all, it is important to find the right size toothbrush for our mouth, so that we can brush comfortably and reach the surface of each tooth. A tooth is not cleaned simply by brushing it! Make sure you find a toothbrush with the size and head shape that allows you to reach every surface of every tooth.

Another important quality of the toothbrush is the type of bristles it has. Bristles that are too hard can damage your teeth and wear down the enamel that covers them, so be sure to opt for a softer type of brush, especially if you have gum disease or receding gums. For good brushing, look for a toothbrush with nylon bristles and rounded tips.

It’s also extremely important that you use the right toothbrush for the job, so make sure you replace your brush regularly. Every two to three months is a good time to replace it, or when the bristles start to look bent and worn. Some toothbrushes come with a color-fade system that tells you exactly when your brush is ready for the bin – simply abandon the brush when the colored bristles start to fade.

A healthy set of teeth is an important part of looking and feeling great, and your trusty toothbrush is an important tool to help you maintain your oral health. So treat their teeth well with the right brush and don’t be afraid to show off your smile.
